Can I trademark my gala?

Case Description
I have started a large gala/awards/fundraiser, that would involve the whole city and I keep being told what a great idea it is, the only problem is the person who I presented the idea, the name, all of my work, from the design with a little tweek here and there , is now trying to make it as their own since it will become an annual event? If I trade mark it will that allow me to keep it as mine? Because I have put countless hours all of my suggestions they use and the name of the gala as well.
