Closing Estate with no Assets

Case Description
My common-law husband recently passed away. There are no assets in his name, or jointly between us. However, there is as substantial debt that I am not named on. How doI go about closing his estate, informing creditors, closing accounts, etc. as quickly and cost-efficiently as possible? I'm a student, and as the estate is in deficit, any legal fees will be coming out of my pocket.
