Disputing collections charges

Case Description
Hello I just received a letter from Collections Group of Canada regarding an outstanding bill for $1100. The charges were incurred from five collect calls placed to my partner while on vacation. The international calls were routed through a Canadian company called Canopco. I was informed at the time that the billing would be the equivilant to what my normal service provider Telus would charge. Clearly they were not. I have tried to negotiate the charges with the company Canopco in Toronto however they use an automated phone system and never return calls. Now that the charges have been put to this collection company I am unaware on how to proceed to dispute the outstanding bill and how to protect my credit rating.
I guess my specific question is how do I proceed to dispute this bill and what are my options with the collections company?
