neighbour's shed against my house

Case Description
A neighbour has a shed butting against my house. He previously co-owned the home and now owns and live it it himself. The previous co-owner/resident asked if the shed was OK. He was told not really,but it will be alright for the time being. The current owner has been told to not nail stuff into our house, as there is no separate shed wall against our house - can he be required to remove the shed? If not,can he be made responsible for any damage to my wall? Is this a city by-law issue or is this a civil legal matter? Can a lawyer help in this matter?
