Case Description
Small business owner renting space in a small mall. Anchor pulled out of mall a year ago. The lights in the backroom of my shop were wired into the anchor store. When anchor closed they turned off the power to that space about two weeks later. The lights in the backroom of my shop were than turned off as well as the security lights in the parking lot. I personally didn\'t know it was connected. I guess even the landlord didn\'t know. It\'s a relatively old building, about 60 years old. The lights went off on a Thursday. On Saturday night I was getting pretty nervous because I\'m the only one who works in my shop and I usually work after hours. At 6:00PM the two other shops in the mall closed. I stayed later to do some inventory and the darkness in the backroom as well as the darkness from the parking lot was absolutely freaking me out. I did not feel safe in the least. I just knew something was gonna happen. I just had that feeling. Thank god it didn\'t happen while I was still in the shop. Sometime that night or early the next morning the window in the door was broken. I told the landlord about it and the they said that I had to pay for the window because security lights give only \"an illusion of safety.\" Later they told me that the lights in the backroom of my shop were connected to the anchor\'s space so I\'d have to get the backroom rewired at my expense. This all happened about a year ago and I\'m still mad about how I was manipulated by the landlord. For months later I was worried something else was going to happen to cost me more money or that the lights in the parking lot would go out again and leave me feeling vulnerable, which they did. According to them they\'re not responsible for anything outside of the walls, floors, and ceiling. But this was a unique occurance. It\'s not everyday an anchor store pulls out and other tenants have to rewire the lights because of it. I still feel like they took advantage of me. About a week ago they put up a for sale sign for the mall, they didn\'t even bother to tell their tenants they were doing this, and now I\'m having issues with my lights again. I don\'t think they\'re wired in right. I\'m basically waiting for something else to happen and I know I\'m going to be forced to pay for the rewiring of these lights. The whole thing\'s so frustrating. My lease is up in November so I don\'t want to spend too much money on getting the lights fixed because it\'s not like I\'ll be enjoying them for long. The situation (along with the lack of lights) is giving me migraines. I need help. Is there anything I can do about this?
