Tennant wanting to end a fixed-term tenancy agreement early

Case Description
I have recently discovered that I am going to be layed off for the winter. Because I was unaware of this until now, I am forced to end my fixed term tenancy because I simply will not be able to pay rent. Ive been speaking to my landlord and he says that the only way I can be cleared of making payments is if he is able to rent the apartment to someone else, or if I sublet the apartment myself. Do I have any other options as a tenant to avoid payment without hurting my credit? Is the ONLY option I have to hope that another tenant takes my place? or is there any other options for myself?
